We really hate the taste that mass-produced charcoal gives to our food. Not to mention the environmental impact of importing charcoal from all around the world. Our BBQ'ing improved massively once we better understood the product and the benefits of using it. We have been thrilled to find British Lumpwood Charcoal, that's kiln produced on the outskirts of Bristol. You should get 6-8 cooking sessions out of the bag.
The charcoal is made by skilled woodsman Joe Weaver who says:
Our charcoal is made from sustainably managed woodlands using traditional management techniques including coppicing and thinning. Coppicing involves cutting broadleaf trees which are then regrown for a number of years. This not only prolongs the life of the tree but also enables a continuous source of products (polewood, firewood and charcoal).
The charcoal is made using a traditional steel ring kiln similar to the one pictured above. The production of our charcoal uses no additives to aid lighting and does not use illegally harvested tropical timber or slave labour.
In addition, this is a local product. By buying this charcoal you are supporting your local retailer, your local woodsman and the sustainable management of local woodland. It also makes your barbecued food taste nicer!
